The Chilling Legacy of H.H. Holmes and His Murder Castle

His tale is not one carved by heroism or ingenuity but one woven from the dark threads of deceit, manipulation, and murder. He is remembered as America’s first serial killer, a man whose cunning was matched only by his cruelty.

As the story goes, Holmes was not always the monster the world came to know. From a normal looking family in New Hampshire, he was born in 1861, he was a smart young boy who did well in school. But this was not the real person, there was a growing interest in the macabre. By the time he was an adult, the change was complete.

Holmes was born to a devout Methodist family and was young Robert, he preferred puzzles and had a very intelligent mind. But comrade mentioned strange behaviors and interest in dead animals. How creepy is that? He attended medical school at the University of Michigan, and this is where he developed his first passion for fraud, which was based on insurance fraud.

It was in Chicago that Holmes turned fully evil. The World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893 was a huge event that drew many people to Chicago and Holmes saw a business opportunity in this. He built a hotel that would later be called the ‘Murder Castle’ equipped with doors that open to other rooms, hideouts and rooms that you cannot hear noise from – a perfect place to kill people without being heard.

People and employees would disappear after being lured by Holmes’ charming and controlling nature and would meet their fate within those walls. It is still shocking to think about the savagery that occurred.

The victims of Holmes were as numerous and as unaware of their fate as the population of Chicago. Many of them were women who had come to Chicago in search of work and a better life and were easily hooked by Holmes’ polite and gentlemanly demeanor. He was, indeed, more than just a face in the crowd – a devil in the face of a handsome man.

A word of caution: Holmes actually hid all the bodies of his victims, so it was impossible to know how many people he had killed. It is said that he killed more than 200 people and it was possible to prove that he killed only 27 people.

His Arrest and Trial: The Fall of an Unlikely Conman

It was not the murders that convinced Holmes to get caught, it was the fraud. It was this greed and arrogance that ultimately made him catch him and bring him to trial in 1895. The fear that gripped the courtroom with the stories he told the audience of his evil acts. At the end of the trial, he was sentenced to death.
